Stories of Change: Maryam

My name is Maryam. Before joining the Azalea Initiative, I wasn’t very confident when it came to connecting with people, especially strangers. I didn’t have many relationships and found it hard to start conversations. But through Azalea, I’ve learned to be more comfortable and confident talking to new people, and that has been a big step forward for me.

Since completing the program this May, I’ve been thinking about how to apply what I’ve learned into my life. I just finished my graduation research and I’m really interested in starting projects that encourage refugees to be more confident in themselves and teach them how to deal with others and the challenges we face. Although I haven’t started anything officially yet, I’m looking for organizations where I can volunteer and be part of projects like these.

During Azalea, I took on a leadership role, but at first, I was hesitant because I doubted my ability. However, when we completed the mental health project and participants told us how much it helped them, my confidence grew a lot. That feeling of making a positive difference motivated me and helped me realize I am capable.

I still feel unsure about where to start volunteering outside Azalea, especially in finding organizations that offer these opportunities to refugees. But now I know what I want to do, and I’m actively searching for places where I can contribute and grow.

Being part of Azalea also showed me the power of community. At the beginning, I was shy and struggled to engage with others. But week after week, the girls welcomed me warmly and I learned so much from them. Chen’s support was invaluable too, always ready to help even before I asked.

Looking ahead, I hope Akar Umbi can collaborate more with other NGOs to provide us with self-development opportunities and help refugees build their mental and overall well-being.

Reflecting on my Azalea journey, I’d say it’s been amazing. It’s not just about gaining skills—it’s about becoming part of a caring community that helps me grow and believe in myself. This experience has given me the courage to take the next steps toward being a changemaker in my community.
