Reducing Biases Across Age Gaps

I always wanted to understand and mingle with our indigenous community, but have not had the chance to because of my previous job. It’s a privilege that my work with MAD For Good gives me the opportunity to actually do what I love and meet people from various backgrounds. It’s important for communities to learn from each other to reduce any unrealistic bias that we have towards a minority community that has gone through much degradation and mislabelling by the major community.

Coming from an Indian-Kadazan background, it was very tough to mingle with my Malay peers because I wasn’t the typical Muslim, and being told off by my teachers that I was hanging out too much with the Indians which then relates back to how it wasn’t very Melayu of me. For me, students actually model from their adult figures. Not sure if I can say the same for parents, but we should provide training or workshops for teachers to reduce prejudices and stigmatisation towards the communities around them. Because I feel it’s not effective if we don’t educate the adults first.
